Finland's entire eastern border to be closed
The Government has decided to close the border crossing point of Raja-Jooseppi during the night between Wednesday and Thursday, that is, as of 30.11.2023. The decision means that all border crossing points on the land border between Finland and Russia will be closed until 13.12. It will not be possible to submit applications for international protection at any border crossing points on the land border between Finland and Russia.
Home affairs ministers to discuss more effective return procedures
The EU home affairs ministers will gather in Brussels on 5 December for a meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council. Items on the agenda for the meeting include issues related to the Schengen area, improving the efficiency of procedures to return migrants, and the implications of the situation in the Middle East for the EU’s internal security.

“There has been a great deal of public debate and people have been asking about whether it is possible to close the entire eastern border. If needed, the entire eastern border can be closed,” says Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen.
Government decides to establish registration centres to improve security
In an extraordinary session held on 24 November, the Government decided that people arriving across the eastern border will be processed at registration centres.
