Finland to restrict entry from Southern Africa due to new virus variant

As of 15.00 on Sunday 28 November, Finland will restrict entry into the country at its external borders for travellers who have been in Botswana, Eswatini, South Africa, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia or Zimbabwe during the 14 days prior to their arrival in Finland. The Government adopted a decision on the matter on 28 November.

New project to examine needs for legislative amendments to address use of migration in hybrid influencing

The Ministry of the Interior has set up a project to assess the possible needs for legislative amendments to prepare for hybrid influencing that exploits migration. The project will assess the means of the current legislation that can be used to prepare for and respond to such hybrid influencing, as well as possible needs to amend the legislation.

Jukka Vornanen to serve as Special Adviser to Minister of the Interior Mikkonen

Jukka Vornanen will take up his duties as Special Adviser to Minister of the Interior Krista Mikkonen on Friday 19 November. Vornanen will be responsible for matters related to internal security, i.e. the police, border security, emergency response centre operations and rescue services.

Voluntary carbon offsetting becomes easier with the amendment to the Money Collection Act

The Money Collection Act will be amended so that voluntary carbon offsetting services can be provided without a money collection licence in future. These services will be excluded from the scope of the Money Collection Act. The Government submitted the bill amending the Act for approval on Thursday 18 November. The President of the Republic is to approve the bill on 19 November. The Act will enter into force on 22 November 2021.

Close to EUR 100 million increase proposed for the Ministry of the Interior’s administrative branch

In the fourth supplementary budget for 2021, a net increase of EUR 99.7 million is proposed for the administrative branch of the Ministry of the Interior. This includes EUR 65 million for the procurement of new offshore patrol vessels for the Border Guard, EUR 30 million for safeguarding the operations of the police and EUR 10.38 million for the administrative branch’s expenditure arising from the COVID-19 pandemic and internal border controls. 

Last AMIF call for proposals to distribute EUR 7.5 million in EU support for projects

A total of 17 projects will receive funding from the last call for proposals of the programming period 2014–2020, organised in May under the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF). EU funding to be granted for the projects will amount to approximately EUR 7.5 million.
