  2. Commission proposal would allow asylum applications to be processed in safe countries outside the EU - Ministry of the Interior

    18.6.2025 | On 20 May, the European Commission submitted a proposal to amend the rules concerning safe third countries. The aim is to make it possible for persons seeking asylum in the EU to go through the asylum process and receive international protection in safe countries outside the EU, the EEA and the Schengen area more often than at present. The Government informed Parliament of the proposal by submitting a Union communication on 18 June.

  4. Sufficient financial resources to be required for Finnish citizenship - Ministry of the Interior

    23.10.2025 | The requirements for acquiring Finnish citizenship will be tightened in accordance with the Government Programme. The new amendments concern the integrity requirement, the requirement for sufficient financial resources and the establishment of identity. In its session on 23 October, the Government proposed that the President of the Republic approve the amendments to the Citizenship Act on 24 October. The amendments will enter into force on 17 December 2025.

    13.11.2025 | Finland is applying for additional funding for its programme under the EU Instrument for Financial Support for Border Management and Visa Policy (BMVI) to strengthen surveillance at the eastern border and in the Gulf of Finland.     23.10.2025 | Villkoren för att få finskt medborgarskap skärps i enlighet med regeringsprogrammet. Ändringarna gäller oförvitlighet, utkomst och utredning av identitet. Statsrådet föreslog vid sitt sammanträde den 23 oktober att republikens president ska stadfästa ändringarna i medborgarskapslagen den 24 oktober. Ändringarna träder i kraft den 17 december 2025.
