    22.11.2023 | Statsrådet har beslutat att stänga också gränsövergångsställena Kuusamo, Salla och Vartius vid östgränsen från och med fredagen den 24 november 2023 kl. 00.00. Alla gränsövergångar vid östgränsen koncentreras till gränsövergångsstället i Raja-Jooseppi. Beslut om detta fattades vid ett extra statsrådssammanträde den 22 november 2023. Beslutet gäller till och med den 23 december 2023.

    9.2.2024 | The Ministry of the Interior has requested comments on a draft version of amendments to the Citizenship Act concerning the period of residence. The public consultation will end on 4 March 2024. According to the proposed amendments, the period of residence required for Finnish citizenship would be extended from the current five years to eight years.

    18.4.2024 | On 18 April, the Government submitted to Parliament a proposal for introducing a new border procedure. The Aliens Act will be amended in line with the EU Asylum Procedures Directive to introduce the new border procedure in Finland. The purpose of the border procedure is to enhance the examination of unfounded applications and the return of applicants whose application has been rejected. In addition, this will prevent secondary movements of asylum seekers to other EU countries.
