8.9.2022 | New provisions to be added to the Aliens Act and the act on migration authorities’ processing of personal data will enable Finland to make use of the support from the European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA) as smoothly as possible in the event of a mass influx of migrants. The Government submitted the bills for approval on Thursday 8 September. The President of the Republic is to approve the bills for the acts on Friday. 18.4.2024 | On 18 April, the Government submitted to Parliament a proposal for introducing a new border procedure. The Aliens Act will be amended in line with the EU Asylum Procedures Directive to introduce the new border procedure in Finland. The purpose of the border procedure is to enhance the examination of unfounded applications and the return of applicants whose application has been rejected. 7.4.2022 | The European Commission is proposing changes to the rules governing the European Union's Home Affairs Funds for the 2014-2020 period and the new 2021-2027 period. The proposal aims to allow for efficient use of the funds to support EU Member States to better respond to the increased migration from Ukraine and the needs arising from border control arrangements. 4.8.2023 | Summary: Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continues. As a result of the war, around four million Ukrainians have applied for temporary protection in the Member States of the European Union. Other migration to the EU is also growing. Both the number of asylum applications submitted in the EU and irregular migration to the EU are on the rise. 15.3.2024 | On 15 March, the Ministry of the Interior sent out for comments a draft act on temporary measures to combat instrumentalised migration. The deadline for submitting comments is 25 March. The proposed act is scheduled to enter into force as soon as possible. 23.9.2021 | A new act will be enacted for the management of the European Union’s Home Affairs Funds. The act on the programming period 2021–2027 lays down provisions on managing the programmes under the Funds and on implementing the aid system.
