16.10.2023 | Finland will tighten the naturalisation requirements during this government term in line with the Programme of Prime Minister Petteri Orpo's Government. The plans involve changes to the legal provisions specifying requirements for the period of residence, integrity and livelihood, and the introduction of a citizenship test. Government proposes more stringent provisions on international protection - Ministry of the Interior
18.4.2024 | The Government intends to make international protection temporary in nature. The length of international protection permits will be shortened to the minimum allowed by EU law. In addition, any particularly serious offence committed in Finland or endangerment of national security would prevent a person from being granted international protection. 18.4.2024 | The Government proposes legislative amendments to prevent the evasion of provisions on entry more effectively than at present. The amendments would prohibit asylum applicants from switching to a work-based or education-based application procedure in order to apply for a residence permit. The amendments would also tighten the identity verification procedure. The Government submitted the proposal to Parliament on 18 April. 9.2.2024 | The Ministry of the Interior has requested comments on a draft version of amendments to the Citizenship Act concerning the period of residence. The public consultation will end on 4 March 2024. The amendments would reinforce Border Guard human resources and make better use of technology in maintaining border security. 24.4.2025 | The Act on Emergency Warnings will be amended to include a provision on powers of municipal health protection authorities to issue emergency warnings. The Government proposed in its session on 24 April that the President of the Republic approve the amendment to the Act on Emergency Warnings. 3.7.2024 | The Ministry of the Interior is requesting comments on the draft government proposal for a new gambling act. The reform of the gambling system is based on the Government Programme. Under the proposal, Veikkaus Oy would no longer hold the monopoly to arrange betting and online slot machine games and casino games. 16.8.2023 | At the beginning of the year, Finland received substantial funding of EUR 242 million from the EU Commission for the establishment of a CBRN strategic reserve.
