16.3.2022 | Minister of the Interior Krista Mikkonen and Sweden's Minister for Justice and Home Affairs Morgan Johansson will meet in Finland on 16 March to discuss the countries' cooperation in civil preparedness, rescue services and the implementation of the police cooperation agreement. The discussions will also touch upon cooperation between the national coast guards.

7.6.2022 | The Ministry of the Interior has commissioned a study on the reflection periods granted to victims of human trafficking during which the victims can decide whether to cooperate with the authorities in apprehending those suspected of human trafficking. At the same time, it will be examined how suspicions of trading in sexual services are taken into account in cases where denial of stay is being considered.

1.12.2022 | On 30 November 2022, Minister of the Interior Krista Mikkonen and experts in several fields discussed youth crime and the emergence of gangs and gang crime. The round table meeting included experts by experience, parties engaged with young people through preventive work and authorities.

29.4.2022 | Cooperation in maintaining and developing civil preparedness is an important part of the joint preparedness of Finland and Sweden. The heads of the authorities responsible for preparedness in the two countries will meet in Helsinki on Friday 29 April. The bilateral meeting is the first of its kind, and the topics on the agenda will include civil preparedness, security of supply and cyber matters. 

25.2.2021 | International internet crime and mobile crime are constantly evolving. Proposed amendments to the Europol Regulation concern, for example, exchange of information between Europol and private operators to ensure that prevention of serious international crime and terrorism meets today’s requirements.

1.6.2022 | A new fast track service enables specialists, growth entrepreneurs and their family members to obtain a residence permit within 14 days. The service will be launched at the beginning of June. This service pledge is one of the Government's many measures to streamline the immigration of experts. 

15.7.2020 | The majority of Finnish people continue to have confidence in the police. According to the latest Police Barometer survey, a total of 91 per cent of the respondents trust the police a lot or a fair amount. Trust in the police has slightly decreased compared to the previous survey (2018: 95 per cent). Based on the results, the police have succeeded well in performing their most important duties and the work of the police is appreciated.

10.7.2019 | The ability to prepare for extreme weather events will be increasingly important in the future. A European team of researchers has developed a role-playing game to help authorities plan their response to extreme weather events. Finland’s Presidency will test the game at a workshop for civil protection authorities focusing on chemical, radiological and hybrid threats as well as weather phenomena.

19.12.2019 | From the beginning of 2020, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment will be responsible for the administration of labour migration matters. This transfer of duties was agreed on in the Government Programme. The objective is to link labour and student migration more closely to employment, industrial, innovation, education and immigration policies.

13.12.2021 | Today, on 13 December, the Ministry of the Interior published the Strategy on Expatriate Finns 2022–2026. The Strategy sets objectives and actions to respond to the service needs of expatriate Finns and to make better use of their expertise.

4.4.2019 | During the 2010s, there has been a significant increase in the numbers of people involved in jihadist activity in Finland. However, most of this activity is still quite small in scale, and it is mainly concerned with providing support in the form of recruitment and financing. Jihadist communication online has also increased during the present decade. The University of Helsinki has conducted two studies on these topics, commissioned by the Ministry of the Interior.

16.9.2019 | The Conference on Preventing Violent Radicalisation will bring together a wide range of international experts at Finlandia Hall, Helsinki, on 17–18 September 2019. They will discuss the prevention of violent radicalisation from the viewpoint of research, practical experiences and the work of public authorities.

23.1.2020 | The majority of Finnish people consider Finland a safe country. People’s concerns and fears can be divided into social and personal factors generating insecurity. Another factor influencing people’s sense of security is the level of trust individuals have in their own abilities and the abilities of their community and society to protect them against threats and overcome different kinds of disturbances in society.

16.9.2021 | The government proposal on the introduction of a long-term national D visa in Finland promotes labour migration and includes the preparation of a fast track pledge. According to the proposal, the national D visa would first cover specialists, growth or start-up entrepreneurs and their family members.

16.4.2020 | Different parts of Finland are reporting engagement in activities by violent extremist movements. Violent non-parliamentary far right movements are active in the areas of all police departments. In some areas, there are also reports of activities of violent non-parliamentary far left groups, mainly anarchists and anti-fascists. These conclusions are presented in the new situation overview of violent extremism.

12.4.2021 | The summary is based on written material and supplements the report published earlier in March on measures to combat online targeting and shaming. However, the assessment of the extent and impacts of online targeting and shaming will require even more research-based information in the future.

19.6.2019 | On Wednesday 19 June, the Government appointed Master of Science Olli-Poika Parviainen as State Secretary to Minister of the Interior Maria Ohisalo, Doctor of Philosophy Minna Kelhä as State Secretary to Minister of Education Li Andersson, and Doctor of Political Science Pilvi Torsti as State Secretary to Minister of Employment Timo Harakka. Their term, starting on 19 June, is the same as that of the ministers.

30.11.2018 | The Ministry of the Interior began a survey concerning the asylum procedure on 30 November. The project will begin with a tendering process to select a party to carry out the survey. The purpose of the independent survey is to identify development needs concerning the asylum procedure, examine the cooperation between different authorities and assess the practices of the administrative courts for dealing with asylum-related issues.

3.12.2020 | The Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment have commissioned a study on how a community sponsorship model could complement the authorities' efforts in the reception of quota refugees. The study will be conducted by the Kokkola University Consortium Chydenius, which operates under the auspices of the University of Jyväskylä. The purpose is to assess the legal and practical feasibility of the model in Finland.

18.11.2019 | The Fire Protection Fund’s innovation award for 2019 was shared between Senior Research Scientist Marko Hassinen for developing a detection scope for extinguishing fires and Firefighter Kalle Kuparinen for a wall support used for firefighting and clearance work.

24.5.2021 | On 24 May, the Ministry of the Interior set up a project to carry out a study on a legislative amendment that would enable the granting of a temporary residence permit and an alien’s passport for a limited period to asylum seekers who have received a negative decision but who have found work. The purpose of the amendment would be to allow a person to travel to obtain a travel document from the authorities of their own country.

27.3.2019 | Regardless of where they live in Finland, young people must have the opportunity to receive help when, for example, they are displaying signs of criminal behaviour, use drugs or are exposed to possible radicalisation. The purpose of the new Anchor manual is to support professionals in their work, so that activities are standardised throughout the country. Anchor work refers to multi-professional cooperation targeted at children and adolescents to promote their wellbeing and prevent crime.

21.3.2017 | Finns would like to be able to discuss asylum policy without the fear of being stigmatised; the discourse should be relevant and fact-based. The issues that were highlighted in the discourse on asylum policy were social polarisation, promotion of integration activities during the asylum seeking process and the impact of the asylum seeker situation on security.

13.5.2020 | In line with the Government’s hybrid strategy, Finland is now beginning the controlled dismantling of the restrictive measures put in place to mitigate the COVID-19 crisis. The restrictions and recommendations on border traffic will be gradually dismantled starting on 14 May at 00.00 until further notice.

12.4.2018 | In a follow-up survey on the Finland 100 centenary year, more than half of the respondents hoped that the Finnish flag would see more use in Independence Day celebrations. 6.11.2019 | Ett seminarium om säkerhetsforskning samlar den 6–7 november i Helsingfors internationella experter inom säkerhetsbranschen för diskussion av säkerhetsforskningens nuläge och utmaningar i Europa. 16.12.2019 | The action plan for incident prevention for the rescue services has been completed. The action plan defines the national targets for incident prevention and makes it into a stronger part of all rescue services activities.

The Review discusses labour migration developments in the light of statistics, the latest legislative changes that have facilitated work permit processes, the progress made in the reform of the Common European Asylum System by the EU and the latest trends in the asylum situation.

26.3.2020 | On 25 March 2020, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment appointed a joint ministerial working group to assess the need for entry into the country of employees working in essential sectors in the state of emergency caused by the coronavirus outbreak.
