16.9.2024 | At a meeting between the Finnish and Swedish governments in Stockholm on 16 September, the countries agreed to further intensify their cooperation in civil preparedness and emergency planning. Minister of Transport, Communications and the Interior Lulu Ranne and Minister for Civil Defence Carl-Oskar Bohlin signed a letter of intent concerning the joint planning of the protection of the civilian population.

19.12.2024 | On 19 December, the Government submitted to Parliament a proposal for an act on the protection of infrastructure critical to society and on the improvement of resilience. The new act will strengthen society's resilience and national security in accordance with the Government Programme.

24.10.2024 | On 24 October, the Government issued a decree laying down provisions on cooperation in preparedness for civil defence and related plans in the wellbeing services counties. The decree specifies the practices of cooperation between the authorities of the wellbeing services counties.

19.12.2024 | Den 19 december lämnade regeringen en proposition till riksdagen med förslag till lag om skydd av samhällets kritiska infrastruktur och om stärkande av samhällets motståndskraft. Genom den nya lagen stärks den samhälleliga resiliensen och den nationella säkerheten i enlighet med regeringsprogrammet.

20.10.2023 | Because of the escalating conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh, more than 100,000 Armenians have fled the region towards Armenia. Armenia has therefore requested assistance through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. This includes, among other things, necessities such as food packages, clothing and hygiene supplies.

10.10.2024 | The EU home affairs ministers will gather in Luxembourg on 10 October for a meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council. The ministers will discuss the impact of external conflicts on the EU and the development of the external border control, among other things. Minister of Transport, Communications and the Interior Lulu Ranne will represent Finland at the meeting.

4.7.2024 | The reception allowance and the spending allowance to persons entitled to reception services will be reduced. On 4 July, the Government proposed that this amendment to the Reception Act be approved. The President of the Republic is scheduled to approve the amendment on Friday. The amendment will enter into force on 1 August and will remain in force temporarily until the end of 2025.

18.11.2024 | The new Preparing for Incidents and Crises guide aimed at the entire population has been published on Suomi.fi. The Ministry of the Interior produced the online guide together with the Digital and Population Data Services Agency and an extensive cooperation network. The guide collects preparedness instructions in one place.

3.9.2024 | “Next year’s budget proposal shows that the Government has the will to strengthen security. In Finland, help is available in times of need,” says Lulu Ranne, Minister of Transport, Communications and the Interior.

6.5.2024 | The European Union will begin providing secure satellite connections to its Member States at the end of this year. The plan is to offer Members States high-speed broadband connectivity in areas where no terrestrial connections are available. In April, the Ministry of the Interior launched a preliminary study on the adoption of secure satellite connections.

18.4.2024 | On 18 April, the Government submitted to Parliament a proposal on temporarily reducing the reception allowance and the spending allowance. The act would enter into force as soon as possible and remain in force until the end of 2025.

8.3.2024 | The Finnish Government will draw up a national security strategy as part of the development of an operating model for the management of national security at the Government level. The strategy aims to identify and assess the most serious threats against Finland in more efficient and extensive ways through cooperation across administrative boundaries.

16.2.2023 | The Government has adopted a resolution on the National Strategy for the Prevention of and Response to Environmental Damage extending to 2035. The Strategy was adopted at the government session on 16 February. Its main objective is to guide the authorities’ preparedness for current and future threats of environmental damage. The Strategy needed to be updated to ensure that the responsibilities of different actors are in line with the current legislation.

30.5.2024 | The EU’s strategic stockpiles in Finland can be deployed in major accidents and emergencies. Supplies must be ready for delivery within 12 hours. An extensive exercise was organised under the lead of the Ministry of the Interior from 27 May to 30 May 2024 where assistance was delivered to an accident area. 

19.2.2024 | The Ministry of the Interior has sent out for comments a government proposal that would provisionally amend the Act on the Reception of Persons Applying for International Protection and on the Identification of and Assistance to Victims of Trafficking in Human Beings. The deadline for submitting comments on the proposal is 13 March 2024.

8.12.2022 | The Ministry of the Interior has set up a legislative project concerning the implementation of the EU’s proposed Directive on Critical Entities Resilience (CER), which is currently under consideration in the Union. The project will enhance national security and the resilience of society.  

13.9.2023 | On Wednesday 13 September, the Government appointed Eriikka Koistinen, Master of Social Sciences, as Director of Communications at the Ministry of the Interior from 18 September 2023 to 17 September 2028.

7.9.2023 | On Thursday 7 September, the Government issued a Decree Amending the Decree on the Running of Veikkaus Oy's Gambling Games. The current decree has been updated to correspond to the amendments made to the Lotteries Act. The amendment will enable Veikkaus to create a new way to run lotteries online.

11.4.2023 | Cyber security threats have increased and diversified in recent years, calling for the continuous and systematic development of cyber security. A newly published report identifies several development measures that can improve the authorities’ capacity to protect national cyber security, combat serious cyber crime and develop cyber defence.

22.12.2022 | Estonia has received a considerable number of Ukrainian refugees considering the size of the country, and the local reception system is overburdened. To ease the situation of the refugees, Finland and Estonia will offer the opportunity for interested Ukrainians to move to Finland by group transport. Preparations for this arrangement began at Estonia’s request and they are being carried out in cooperation between the Estonian and Finnish authorities.

24.3.2022 | Government proposes amendments to the Rescue Act to ensure that it meets the requirements of the EU’s Basic Safety Standards Directive. The legislative amendments would expand site owners’ responsibilities for damping down, clearing and security at the site under the Rescue Act.

22.7.2022 | Finland is also committed to helping Ukraine by taking part in the medical evacuation and treatment of patients from Ukraine together with other EU countries. Transfers have already been started.

8.12.2022 | Inrikesministeriet har tillsatt ett lagstiftningsprojekt som gäller genomförande av förslaget till Europaparlamentets och rådets direktiv om kritiska entiteters motståndskraft, som för närvarande behandlas i EU. Projektet förbättrar samhällets resiliens och den nationella säkerheten. 

28.2.2023 | Over the weekend and on Monday, Finland sent more material assistance to the areas hit by the earthquake in Türkiye. Some of the assistance will be delivered from Türkiye to Syria. There is still a great need for material assistance, such as emergency accommodation and heating, in the region.

15.3.2023 | Finland has been one of the leading providers of assistance to Ukraine's energy sector during the war. On Tuesday 14 March, the latest energy sector assistance, a smart solar power system, was sent from Finland to Ukraine.

22.9.2021 | På grund av EU-kommissionens krav håller Finland på att precisera bestämmelserna om ansvaret för efterröjning enligt räddningslagen. I fortsättningen gäller ansvaret utöver eldsvådor även nödsituationer med risk för strålning, oljeskador och andra olyckor. Samtidigt ska räddningslagen och förordningen om externa räddningsplaner ändras så att kravet på räddningsplaner för bangårdar och hamnområden kvarstår i lagen även i fortsättningen.

19.1.2023 | Regeringen föreslog torsdagen den 19 januari att en lag med bestämmelser om behöriga myndigheter vid bekämpning av terrorisminnehåll online ska stadfästas. Avsikten är att republikens president stadfäster lagen senare på torsdagen. Lagen träder i kraft den 1 februari 2023.

22.7.2022 | Finland har förbundit sig till att hjälpa Ukraina genom att delta i medicinsk evakuering och vård av patienter från Ukraina gemensamt med andra EU-länder. Evakueringen har redan inletts.

12.5.2022 | As a Member State of the European Union, Finland will take responsibility for the migratory impact of the situation in Ukraine, and especially for protecting those fleeing war. Finland is also prepared to receive beneficiaries of temporary protection transferred from other countries as a part of joint EU measures. The Government expressed its position on such transfers in a Union communication to Parliament on 12 May.

2.6.2021 | The Ministry of the Interior has published a programme for police traffic enforcement and traffic safety for 2021–2030. The programme aims to reduce traffic fatalities, serious injuries, traffic accidents and traffic offences, as well as transportation crime and the grey economy in commercial traffic.

20.7.2021 | The Ministry of the Interior has decided to send material assistance to Lithuania through the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism. Lithuania has requested international assistance from the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, where Finland is a member.
