    30.5.2024 | The EU’s strategic stockpiles in Finland can be deployed in major accidents and emergencies. Supplies must be ready for delivery within 12 hours. An extensive exercise was organised under the lead of the Ministry of the Interior from 27 May to 30 May 2024 where assistance was delivered to an accident area.

  3. Finland and Norway hold exercise on cross-border assistance in crisis situations - Ministry of the Interior

    17.9.2025 | Finland and Norway held a preparedness exercise on 15–16 September to prepare for serious accidents, crises and emergencies. The exercise entailed Finland sending medicinal products and medical supplies to Norway in a fictitious crisis scenario. The exercise was related to the EU’s shared emergency stockpiles, known as rescEU stockpiles, some of which are located in Finland.

    4.8.2023 | Summary: Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continues. As a result of the war, around four million Ukrainians have applied for temporary protection in the Member States of the European Union. Other migration to the EU is also growing. Both the number of asylum applications submitted in the EU and irregular migration to the EU are on the rise. At the moment, migration pressure is concentrated on the Central Mediterranean route from Tunisia and Libya to Italy.

  6. Legislation on temporary protection to be reformed - Ministry of the Interior

    16.10.2024 | The Ministry of the Interior has sent out for comments a draft government proposal on temporary protection. As the crisis in Ukraine drags on, there is a need to reform the legislation on temporary protection. The project will prepare the necessary amendments to the Aliens Act concerning people who have fled the war in Ukraine but also other possible situations of temporary protection in the future.

  7. Legislative project investigates possible changes to processing of subsequent applications - Ministry of the Interior

    4.7.2018 | A project appointed by the Ministry of the Interior on 3 July will investigate and draft possible amendments to the Aliens Act concerning the processing of subsequent applications for international protection and the implementation of the Finnish Immigration Service’s decisions enabled by the EU Asylum Procedures Directive. In connection with this project, an amendment required by the Court of Justice of the European Union will also be made to the Aliens Act.

  8. Government proposes amendments to legislation on temporary protection - Ministry of the Interior

    5.12.2024 | The Government proposes amendments to the legislation on temporary protection. The aim is to streamline the granting of temporary protection from the perspective of both the beneficiaries and the authorities. The amendments concern people who have fled the war in Ukraine but also other possible situations of temporary protection in the future. The Government submitted the proposal for the amendments to the Aliens Act to Parliament on 5 December.

    6.5.2024 | The European Union will begin providing secure satellite connections to its Member States at the end of this year. The plan is to offer Members States high-speed broadband connectivity in areas where no terrestrial connections are available.   11. Autumn 2022 call for proposals for EU Home Affairs Funds launched - Ministry of the Interior

    3.10.2022 | The Ministry of the Interior launched the autumn call for proposals for the EU Home Affairs Funds on 3 October 2022. A total of EUR 86.7 million in funding can be applied for from the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF), the Internal Security Fund (ISF) and the Instrument for Financial Support for Border Management and Visa Policy (BMVI). The call for proposals will end on 1 November 2022.

  12. Temporary protection for Ukrainians displaced by war to continue - Ministry of the Interior

    3.9.2024 | The Ministry of the Interior has set up a legislative project to amend the legislation on temporary protection in order to extend temporary protection for Ukrainian nationals and their family members even after 4 March 2025. The project will prepare the necessary amendments to the Aliens Act.

    7.4.2022 | The European Commission is proposing changes to the rules governing the European Union's Home Affairs Funds for the 2014-2020 period and the new 2021-2027 period. The proposal aims to allow for efficient use of the funds to support EU Member States to better respond to the increased migration from Ukraine and the needs arising from border control arrangements. The Ministry of the Interior informed the Parliament about the proposal by Union communication on 7 April 2022.

  14. Draft legislative proposal on tightening conditions for family reunification circulated for comments - Ministry of the Interior

    12.9.2024 | The Ministry of the Interior has sent out for comments a draft government proposal on tightening the conditions for family reunification. The conditions would be made more stringent in cases where a third-country national applies for a residence permit based on family ties. The legislative project aims to introduce the additional conditions for family reunification enabled by the EU Family Reunification Directive, and to draft the required amendments to the Aliens Act.

The European Commission granted co-financing for a joint project of the rescue departments of South Karelia, North Karelia, South Savo, North Savo and Kymenlaakso for the procurement of special equipment required for a rescue team fighting forest fires.

The act on the programming period 2021–2027 lays down provisions on managing the programmes under the Funds and on implementing the aid system.
