4.12.2025 | The Ministry of the Interior has sent out for comments a government proposal for an act on the automated search and exchange of data for police cooperation and for amending the Act on the Processing of Personal Data by the Police. The proposal introduces amendments to national legislation required by the EU Regulation on the automated search and exchange of data for police cooperation (the Prüm II Regulation). The deadline for submitting comments is Monday 19 January 2026.

6.6.2024 | The Finnish Government endorses the European Commission’s proposal for an agreement on the exchange of information between Europol and the Brazilian authorities. The agreement is beneficial for Finland because it promotes the fight against serious crime and terrorism against Europe. The Government submitted its position on the agreement proposal to Parliament on 6 June.

15.7.2024 | Cooperation between the law enforcement authorities of the EU Member States and the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation (Europol) will be improved by developing automated search and exchange of data. The Ministry of the Interior set up a legislative project on 15 July 2024 to prepare the amendments to the national legislation that may be required by the EU Regulation.

25.1.2024 | The European Commission strives to increase police cooperation in the fight against migrant smuggling and trafficking in human beings. In November, the Commission proposed a regulation that would reinforce Europol's role and increase information sharing between Member States. The Government expressed its position on the Commission's proposal in its communication submitted to Parliament on 25 January 2024.

19.12.2024 | The Government proposes that the President of the Republic approve the Act on the Exchange of Information between the Law Enforcement Authorities of Member States of the European Union and certain related acts and that they enter into force on 20 December 2024. The new Act aims to improve the exchange of information between EU Member States for the purpose of combating crime.

25.1.2024 | Euroopan komissio haluaa lisätä poliisiyhteistyötä ihmissalakuljetuksen ja ihmiskaupan torjunnassa. Komissio antoi marraskuussa asetusehdotuksen, joka vahvistaisi Europolin roolia ja lisäisi tiedonvaihtoa jäsenvaltioiden välillä. Valtioneuvosto ilmaisi kantansa komission ehdotukseen eduskunnalle antamassaan kirjelmässä 25.1.2024.

17.11.2022 | The Government has adopted a resolution on the National Counter-Terrorism Strategy for 2022–2025. The Strategy sets out the strategic counter-terrorism objectives and actions and supports sustained and broad cooperation among all those involved in counter-terrorism. 12.2.2021 | The Ministry of the Interior has prepared legislative amendments to implement the EU directive on access to financial information at national level. The directive contains rules to facilitate the use of information held in bank account registries by the authorities for the purpose of preventing, detecting, investigating or prosecuting certain offences.

7.3.2018 | The home affairs ministers of the EU countries will discuss interoperability between EU information systems on 8 March at the meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council. Finland's representative at the meeting will be the new Minister of the Interior, Kai Mykkänen. Interoperability between information systems is an important issue for Finland with a view to improving both national and EU internal security.
