25.10.2018 | In order to reduce the negative economic, social and health impacts of gambling, the Government is proposing requiring players to identify themselves when they play slot machines found in shops or kiosks, for example. The proposal on this matter was submitted to Parliament on 25 October.

27.6.2019 | The survey report provides information on the standards and efficiency of the asylum procedure and the asylum applicants’ legal protection. The survey, examining the entire procedure and all authorities involved, was the first of its kind.

17.5.2019 | Hate speech is such a serious problem that the Government must define policies for its eradication. A working group that examined the phenomenon proposes that an action plan against hate speech be drawn up, a centre of expertise be established, and the relevant legislation be amended. Hate speech has harmful consequences not only for the victim but also for democratic society as a whole, the rule of law, and freedom of expression.

21.3.2019 | The Security Committee has granted its 2018 Timanttiteko (Diamond Act) award to the group in charge of implementing the National Climate Change Adaptation Plan for 2022. The award was presented on 21 March 2019 at the Erve Forum, an annual cooperation event for security professionals organised by the State Security Networks Group.

6.7.2018 | Crisis Management Centre Finland (CMC Finland) will be relocated from Kuopio to Helsinki. The Ministry of the Interior made a decision on the relocation on 5 July 2018. The Crisis Management Centre is one of the authorities involved in the implementation of foreign and security policy in Finland. Strengthening Finland’s position in international crisis management must be done in cooperation with our partners in comprehensive crisis management and other international partners.

25.2.2020 | Minister of the Interior Maria Ohisalo awarded Medals of Merit First Class for Civil Defence and Medals of Merit Second Class for Civil Defence on 24 February. These Medals of Merit are awarded for meritorious or highly meritorious work for the good of civil defence.

14.12.2018 | A new Migration Review has been published. The report provides a concise summary of Finland’s migration-related policies, key legal amendments and up-to-date statistics. It also includes an extensive media review.

16.8.2019 | A draft for an action plan for accident prevention for the rescue services has been completed. The new action plan defines the national targets for accident prevention and makes it all the more a part of all rescue services activities.

9.4.2021 | The Government has published a plan to lift the restrictions imposed due to the COVID-19 epidemic, along with a target timetable.

26.3.2020 | On 25 March 2020, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment appointed a joint ministerial working group to assess the need for entry into the country of employees working in essential sectors in the state of emergency caused by the coronavirus outbreak.

22.5.2018 | A new Migration Review has been published. The Review discusses labour migration developments in the light of statistics, the latest legislative changes that have facilitated work permit processes, the progress made in the reform of the Common European Asylum System by the EU and the latest trends in the asylum situation.

8.4.2020 | The Government has concluded its negotiations on the 2021–2024 General Government Fiscal Plan and the second supplementary budget.

7.1.2021 | On 7 January 2021, the Ministry of the Interior sent out for comments a proposal for reforming the Lotteries Act, which regulates gambling in Finland. 16.12.2019 | The action plan for incident prevention for the rescue services has been completed. The action plan defines the national targets for incident prevention and makes it into a stronger part of all rescue services activities.

12.4.2018 | In a follow-up survey on the Finland 100 centenary year, more than half of the respondents hoped that the Finnish flag would see more use in Independence Day celebrations. Moreover, many seem to hope that this wider use will become a tradition. The Finnish flag’s centenary will be celebrated in May.

6.11.2019 | Turvallisuustutkimuksen seminaari kokoaa Helsinkiin 6.-7.11. kansainvälisiä turvallisuusalan asiantuntijoita keskustelemaan turvallisuustutkimuksen nykytilasta ja haasteista Euroopassa. 13.5.2020 | In line with the Government’s hybrid strategy, Finland is now beginning the controlled dismantling of the restrictive measures put in place to mitigate the COVID-19 crisis. The restrictions and recommendations on border traffic will be gradually dismantled starting on 14 May at 00.00 until further notice.
