A better understanding exists of Finland’s special characteristics in preparations for amending the Firearms Directive
Press release of the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Defence
This is an English translation of a press release originally issued in Finnish on 25 February 2016.
On 25 February in Brussels, Minister of the Interior Petteri Orpo and Minister of Defence Jussi Niinistö had a meeting with Member of the European Parliament Vicky Ford, who is responsible for the European Parliament report on the proposal to amend the Firearms Directive. Ms Ford showed understanding of Finland's interests and special needs. When the proposed amendments to the Firearms Directive are discussed, the special characteristics of different countries should be taken into account.
At the meeting, the ministers discussed key objectives from Finland's point of view. These relate to voluntary national defence, hunting, sport shooting and the collection of weapons.
At present, the Firearms Directive is being discussed by both the Council and the European Parliament.
