The EU or member states themselves are responsible for readmission agreements

5.2.2026 | According to the Government Programme, Finland’s annual refugee quota is 500 persons. In its plenary session on 5 February, the Government decided on which refugee groups would be included in this year’s quota and how many places would be reserved for each group.

28.9.2018 | Minister of the Interior Kai Mykkänen will travel to Ankara in Turkey to participate in selecting quota refugees. He will observe the refugee selection process, in which the Finnish authorities will work together with the UN Refugee Agency UNHCR.

28.2.2023 | Over the weekend and on Monday, Finland sent more material assistance to the areas hit by the earthquake in Türkiye. Some of the assistance will be delivered from Türkiye to Syria. There is still a great need for material assistance, such as emergency accommodation and heating, in the region.

10.4.2026 | Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen is currently visiting Türkiye to meet with the Turkish Minister of Interior Mustafa Çiftçi. Topics on the ministers’ agenda include the effects of the situation in the Middle East on migration as well as counterterrorism and police cooperation.

26.11.2021 | Finland has received EU funding to build a rescue team for fighting forest fires. The European Commission granted co-financing for a joint project of the rescue departments of South Karelia, North Karelia, South Savo, North Savo and Kymenlaakso for the procurement of special equipment required for a rescue team fighting forest fires.

7.10.2021 | EU home affairs ministers will gather in Luxembourg on 8 October for a meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council. Items on the agenda include the external dimension of migration, the situation in Afghanistan and the fight against child sexual abuse. Minister of the Interior Maria Ohisalo will represent Finland at the meeting.

29.7.2020 | The European Commission has granted significant co-financing to the Oulu-Koillismaa Rescue Department for a high capacity pumping module. The high capacity pumping module is a joint project of four Rescue Departments in northern Finland (Oulu-Koillismaa, Jokilaaksot, Kainuu and Lappi).

4.3.2020 | Minister of the Interior Maria Ohisalo will attend an extraordinary meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council on 4 March. The home affairs ministers of EU Member States will meet in Brussels to discuss the current situation at the Greek-Turkish border.

21.12.2018 | The Ministry of the Interior has confirmed the decision of the ministerial working group on migration concerning the allocation of the refugee quota of 750 people for 2019. Finland is committed to receive Syrian refugees from Turkey and Congolese refugees from Zambia in the 2019 quota.

18.12.2020 | Amendments to legislation and decrees applying to the police, immigration and border control will enter into force at the beginning of 2021, of which the most important ones are explained in this release.

17.9.2019 | In its budget session on 17 September, the Government decided that the annual number of quota refugees will be raised from the current 750 to 850 in line with the Government Programme. The Finnish authorities select the quota refugees to be admitted to Finland on the basis of a submission by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

9.8.2018 | The Ministry of the Interior proposes that an appropriation totalling EUR 1,485 million be allocated to its administrative branch in 2019. This is, as a whole, an increase of nearly EUR 10 million on the approved 2018 Budget figure.
