Working together to fight cybercrime

Finland’s National Cyber Security Strategy promotes a comprehensive approach to tackling cybercrime.

The police investigate cybercrime in cooperation with other law enforcement agencies and use the information they gather to prevent future offences. Finnish Customs and the Finnish Border Guard also investigate crimes that make use of information networks and technology, each within their own areas of responsibility.

Because cybercrime and threats cross national borders and involve many types of authorities, cooperation between public authorities, businesses and other organisations is essential.

Cybercrime is tackled by preventing, detecting and investigating suspected offences and by making effective use of criminal intelligence, supported by knowledge-based management. Reporting cybercrime early helps prevent similar crimes and limit the damage.

Most cybercrime cases are handled by local police. More complex international cases are investigated by the Cybercrime Centre at Finland’s National Bureau of Investigation.

The EU has also taken action to tackle fast-changing cybercrime. Judicial and law enforcement authorities across Europe are working together more closely and exchanging information to meet the demands of today’s security environment.
