4.5.2026 | The Ministry of the Interior has launched a project to develop guidance for the public on how to prepare for emergency conditions. The guidance will complement existing preparedness advice in the Preparing for Incidents and Crises guide published on Suomi.fi.

24.4.2025 | In its spending limits discussion, the Government agreed on strengthening the resources of the police, the Finnish Border Guard, the Finnish Security and Intelligence Service and civil defence in order to prepare for wide-ranging threats. The capabilities of the internal security authorities are an essential part of Finland's comprehensive security.

13.8.2024 | A new Government Report on Internal Security will be drawn up under the direction of the Ministry of the Interior. The report is due to be submitted to Parliament during the autumn session in 2025.

10.6.2024 | Finland, together with Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia and Poland, has published a letter to the European Commission calling for action to give Member States more effective tools to combat the instrumentalisation of migration.

14.3.2024 | On Thursday 14 March, the Government appointed Doctor of Social Science Juha Martelius Director of the Finnish Security and Intelligence Service for a fixed term of five years (1 April 2024–31 March 2029).

29.1.2024 | On Monday 29 January, the Ministry of the Interior and the United States Department of Homeland Security signed a joint statement of intent on deepening scientific and technological cooperation in the field of homeland security. 

16.3.2022 | Minister of the Interior Krista Mikkonen and Sweden's Minister for Justice and Home Affairs Morgan Johansson will meet in Finland on 16 March to discuss the countries' cooperation in civil preparedness, rescue services and the implementation of the police cooperation agreement. The discussions will also touch upon cooperation between the national coast guards.

1.2.2023 | On January 31, 2023, Deputy Secretary for Homeland Security John K. Tien and Krista Mikkonen, Minister of Interior of Finland, and their respective delegations met in Washington, D.C.

13.5.2025 | Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen met Estonia's new Minister of the Interior Igor Taro in Helsinki on Tuesday 13 May. Topics of their discussion included preparedness, hybrid threats and their prevention, and police cooperation between Estonia and Finland.

27.3.2025 | The Ministry of the Interior has published a nation-wide report on how well the targets set for rescue services and their finances have been achieved in the wellbeing services counties. The report recommends that the counties focus on recruitment of rescuers and preparedness for civil defence. They should also step up their efforts on incident and accident prevention with a view to reducing the number of incidents, accidents and fires across Finland.

16.12.2021 | Finland’s national security has improved with the legislation on intelligence. Information gathering on threats to national security and national defence has become more effective, too, since the new intelligence powers entered into force. This is stated in a recent report on intelligence legislation, which was adopted at the government plenary session on 16 December.

16.12.2021 | New acts will improve safety and security at football matches and other sports events. On Thursday 16 December, the President of the Republic approved the relevant bill on the Council of Europe Convention on an Integrated Safety, Security and Service Approach at Football Matches and Other Sports Events and the bill to amend the Assembly Act. Provisions on the entry into force of the acts will be laid down by government decree in early 2022.

31.3.2025 | Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen will attend the Border Security Summit in London on 31 March. The ministerial summit will focus on crime related to people smuggling and organised immigration crime. The aim is to identify the best ways to combat these phenomena.

10.2.2022 | New acts will improve safety and security at football matches and other sports events. The Government issued decrees providing that the acts on the Council of Europe Convention on an Integrated Safety, Security and Service Approach at Football Matches and Other Sports Events and on amendments to the Assembly Act will enter into force on 1 March. The President of the Republic confirmed the acts on 16 December 2021.

12.4.2022 | The Border Guard’s preparedness and capacity to respond to incidents under normal conditions will be improved by reviewing the legislation on the powers of the Border Guard. The Ministry of the Interior has set up a project to assess the need to amend border guard legislation. In particular, the aim is to draw up the necessary legislative amendments to prepare for hybrid influence activities that exploit migration.

19.12.2024 | On 19 December, the Government appointed General Staff Officer Matti Sarasmaa, Chief of Division, as Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior. He will take up his new post on 1 February 2025 and his term of office will last for five years.

10.10.2024 | The EU home affairs ministers will gather in Luxembourg on 10 October for a meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council. The ministers will discuss the impact of external conflicts on the EU and the development of the external border control, among other things. Minister of Transport, Communications and the Interior Lulu Ranne will represent Finland at the meeting.

1.3.2022 | Capacity of authorities to ensure national cyber security to be assessed and developed The Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Defence have set up a project to assess the capacity of authorities to ensure national cyber security, prevent cyber crime, implement cyber defence and respond to rapidly evolving situations that threaten the cyber security of society. 

26.9.2024 | Finland is applying for additional funding for its programme under the EU Instrument for Financial Support for Border Management and Visa Policy (BMVI) to strengthen surveillance at the eastern border. Finland is seeking the maximum amount defined by the Commission, EUR 50 million. The Government decided to apply for funding on 26 September 2024.

23.10.2020 | A report on safety and security in sparsely populated areas has been completed. The report brings together up-to-date information on phenomena and challenges affecting safety and security in sparsely populated areas and lists five recommended measures to increase safety and sense of security in these areas. The report has been prepared in cooperation with the Harvaturva network, coordinated by the Ministry of the Interior.
