Government proposes stricter requirements for acquiring Finnish citizenship

The requirements for acquiring Finnish citizenship will be tightened in accordance with the Government Programme. Amendments are proposed to the provisions on the establishment of identity, the integrity requirement and the requirement for sufficient financial resources. The Government submitted a proposal on the matter to Parliament on 27 March.

A working group of the Ministry of the Interior explored the possibility of introducing a citizenship test as a requirement for acquiring Finnish citizenship. According to the Government Programme, the Citizenship Act will be reformed by tightening the requirements for acquiring Finnish citizenship.

Finland has for the first time delivered assistance from an EU-funded rescEU stockpile to a country that has requested assistance. This week, a truckload of personal protective equipment and chemical detectors was delivered to Ukraine to respond to the needs of the country's rescue services.
