Finland to receive EUR 50 million in additional funding to strengthen surveillance at eastern border

Finland will receive EUR 50 million in additional funding from the European Commission to strengthen surveillance at the eastern border through the EU Instrument for Financial Support for Border Management and Visa Policy (BMVI). Finland’s 1,340-kilometre-long border with Russia is also an external border of the EU. More effective surveillance of the border will strengthen the security of the EU as a whole in the changing landscape of hybrid threats and instrumentalised migration.


Project launched to review Finnish Border Guard’s preparedness powers

The Ministry of the Interior has set up a project to enhance the Finnish Border Guard’s powers related to preparedness to meet the demands of the changed security and operating environment. The project will assess and prepare the necessary amendments to legislation for normal conditions.

The aim is to streamline the granting of temporary protection from the perspective of both the beneficiaries and the authorities. The amendments concern people who have fled the war in Ukraine but also other possible situations of temporary protection in the future.
