Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson to visit Finland
Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson will visit Finland on 8–9 September. During her visit, she will learn about the Finnish reception system and border control at the eastern border of the EU.
Commissioner Ylva Johansson will visit the reception centre in Joutseno and Nuijamaa border crossing point together with Minister of the Interior Krista Mikkonen.
“The fundamental values of the European Union include respect for human dignity and human rights, freedom and the rule of law. Even in situations of high migratory pressure, we must be able to keep the external borders open to people who are seeking protection from war or persecution, or whose livelihood has been destroyed because of drought caused by climate change, for example,” says Minister Mikkonen.
During her visit, Commissioner Johansson will also meet with Kirsi Pimiä, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior, and with Antti Pelttari, Director of the Finnish Security and Intelligence Service.
In addition, the Commissioner will meet with Prime Minister Sanna Marin.
Commissioner Johansson’s responsibilities include internal security and migration matters. Among the major issues are the reform of the EU asylum system and the development of a new EU internal security strategy.
