Research agency selected for survey of asylum procedure
Research agency Owal Group has been selected to carry out an independent survey concerning the asylum procedure. The Ministry of the Interior selected Owal Group following a tendering process that began in November 2018. The survey, which will examine the asylum procedure in its entirety, is set to be completed in summer 2019.
The purpose of the independent survey is to identify development needs concerning the asylum procedure, examine the cooperation between different authorities and assess the practices of the administrative courts for dealing with asylum-related issues. The objective is to determine how the asylum procedure could be streamlined and shortened and how the quality of the procedure could be improved in future, while also better safeguarding the legal protection of asylum seekers.
The survey aims to support the public discussion by providing evidence-based data on the asylum procedure as a whole. The survey, examining the entire procedure and all authorities involved, will be the first of its kind.
To support its survey work, the research agency will put together a broad-ranging group of experts including representatives from organisations and authorities dealing with asylum-related matters, among others.
A separate steering committee will not be established for the survey, but the Ministry of the Interior’s Administration and Development Department and Director of Strategic Steering and Development Harri Martikainen will provide guidance on the practical aspects of the work.
