Property and traffic offences the most common types of crime
The crime rate has mainly shown a downward trend in Finland in recent decades.
Property and traffic offences remain the most common types of crime. Property offences account for just under half of the total number of offences, while traffic offences make up about one fifth.
Trends in different types of crime depend not only on the actual increase or decrease in offences committed but also on how actively victims report them to the police. The number of offences known to the authorities is also influenced by the effectiveness of law enforcement and the focus of supervision activities.
Furthermore, recorded crime is also affected by legislative amendments and any changes in how offences are recorded.
