15.1.2026 | Veikkaus Oy’s monopoly on running gambling games will end. Under the new Gambling Act, the running of betting games, online slot and casino games, and online money bingo will be opened to competition under a licensing system. In its session on 15 January, the Government proposed that the President of the Republic approve the Gambling Act on 16 January. Most provisions of the new act will enter into force on 1 July 2027.

16.12.2021 | New acts will improve safety and security at football matches and other sports events. On Thursday 16 December, the President of the Republic approved the relevant bill on the Council of Europe Convention on an Integrated Safety, Security and Service Approach at Football Matches and Other Sports Events and the bill to amend the Assembly Act. Provisions on the entry into force of the acts will be laid down by government decree in early 2022.

10.2.2022 | New acts will improve safety and security at football matches and other sports events. The Government issued decrees providing that the acts on the Council of Europe Convention on an Integrated Safety, Security and Service Approach at Football Matches and Other Sports Events and on amendments to the Assembly Act will enter into force on 1 March. The President of the Republic confirmed the acts on 16 December 2021.

2.9.2025 | The Government of Prime Minister Petteri Orpo has reached a decision on its budget proposal for 2026. The Government’s decisions aim to support economic growth, which is picking up. Supporting economic growth and continuing responsible fiscal management is necessary to ensure the security of people in Finland and safeguard their access to important services going forward.

8.4.2021 | On 8 April, the Government submitted to Parliament a government proposal concerning safety, security and service measures at football matches and other sports events. The purpose of the proposal is to bring into force the Council of Europe Convention on an Integrated Safety, Security and Service Approach at Football Matches and Other Sports Events. The Government also proposes that the Assembly Act be amended.

10.11.2022 | The Government proposes amendments to the Lotteries Act to make it compatible with a new model for financing activities with proceeds from gambling. From the beginning of 2024, Veikkaus Oy’s proceeds could be entered in the Budget without earmarking their purpose of use under the Lotteries Act.

2.12.2020 | The Ministry of the Interior has sent a draft government proposal concerning safety, security and service measures at football matches and other sports events out for comments. The proposal would bring into force the Council of Europe Convention on an Integrated Safety, Security and Service Approach at Football Matches and Other Sports Events and amend the Assembly Act.

8.11.2023 | Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen and Swedish Minister for Civil Defence Carl-Oskar Bohlin met in Espoo on 7 November. The Ministers had a general discussion on the importance of civil preparedness and civil defence shelters. Minister Bohlin recognised the long-term work carried out in Finland on civil defence shelters.

Hankkeen tavoitteena on selvittää rahapelijärjestelmän uudistamista hallitusohjelman mukaisesti ja valmistella ehdotus lisenssijärjestelmään siirtymistä koskevaksi säädösperustaksi.

23.10.2023 | Finland and the EU have continued their active support for the Ukrainian authorities to mitigate the effects of the Russian attacks. The Ministry of the Interior coordinates the assistance that Finland sends to Ukraine through the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism together with the European Emergency Response Coordination Centre ERCC. Most of the material sent to Ukraine has been donated by private and public sector operators.

3.9.2024 | The 2025 budget proposal of Prime Minister Orpo's Government bolsters conditions for economic growth. Economic growth driven by the private sector will also serve to secure the financing base for central government finances. The fast-acting measures to curb indebtedness that were decided on due to the difficult situation in central government finances will move forward.
