15.12.2022 | On 15 December 2022, the Government decided that to ease the pressure on the reception systems in the EU Member States in the Mediterranean, Finland will take up to 175 asylum seekers relocated from the region. The asylum seekers can be relocated to Finland if they are likely to be in need of international protection. Priority will be given to vulnerable people, such as unaccompanied minors, single-parent families, persons with medical conditions and persons with disabilities.

27.2.2020 | In its decision on 27 February, the Government confirmed the policy of the government groups to assist vulnerable asylum seekers. The measures now agreed will facilitate the humanitarian situation of asylum seekers in the EU Member States of the Mediterranean region.

9.3.2023 | EU home affairs ministers gather in Brussels on 9 March for a meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council. Items on the agenda include the monitoring of the implementation of the Action Plans on the Western Balkans and Central Mediterranean migration routes. The European Commission presented both plans at the end of last year. Minister of the Interior Krista Mikkonen will represent Finland at the meeting.

4.8.2023 | Summary: Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continues. As a result of the war, around four million Ukrainians have applied for temporary protection in the Member States of the European Union. Other migration to the EU is also growing. Both the number of asylum applications submitted in the EU and irregular migration to the EU are on the rise. At the moment, migration pressure is concentrated on the Central Mediterranean route from Tunisia and Libya to Italy.

17.11.2022 | On 17 November 2022, the Government decided that Finland will take ten asylum seekers rescued by the Ocean Viking vessel that docked in France. Priority will be given to vulnerable asylum seekers.

24.11.2022 | EU home affairs ministers will gather in Brussels on Friday 25 November for an extraordinary meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council. The ministers will discuss migration to the EU, taking stock of the urgent challenges and joint way forward. Minister of the Interior Krista Mikkonen will represent Finland at the meeting.

19.7.2023 | EU home affairs ministers will gather in Logroño in Spain on 20 July for an informal meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council. The agenda will include the fight against organised crime, the situation in Ukraine and migration. Finland will be represented by Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen.

28.9.2022 | Minister of the Interior Krista Mikkonen will meet with Maltese Minister of the Interior Byron Camilleri in Helsinki on 28 September. The Ministers will discuss, among other things, the EU’s progress in reforming its migration and asylum policy as well as the instrumentalisation of migrants.

11.9.2020 | Finland has decided to assist Greece by receiving 11 unaccompanied minor asylum seekers from the Moria camp destroyed by fire. In the spring, the Government decided to receive 175 particularly vulnerable asylum seekers from the Mediterranean region. The reception of 11 underage asylum seekers is part of the implementation of this decision.

6.7.2020 | The EU home affairs ministers will meet at the first informal meeting of Interior Ministers during Germany’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union on 7 July. The meeting will be held as a video conference. The Ministers will discuss the development of European law enforcement cooperation and search and rescue operations in the Mediterranean Sea. Finland will be represented by Minister of the Interior Maria Ohisalo.

4.3.2020 | Minister of the Interior Maria Ohisalo will attend an extraordinary meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council on 4 March. The home affairs ministers of EU Member States will meet in Brussels to discuss the current situation at the Greek-Turkish border.
