11.7.2024 | On Thursday 11 July, the Government issued a resolution on the Action Plan for the Prevention and Combating of Violent Radicalisation and Violent Extremism.

23.10.2024 | The first national risk assessment of money laundering and terrorist financing for non-profit organisations (NPOs) has been completed. In addition to the assessment of risks, it is aimed at increasing awareness of the Finnish NPO sector among obliged entities specified in the Act on Preventing Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing, supervisory authorities as well as operators in the sector itself.

16.4.2020 | Different parts of Finland are reporting engagement in activities by violent extremist movements. Violent non-parliamentary far right movements are active in the areas of all police departments. In some areas, there are also reports of activities of violent non-parliamentary far left groups, mainly anarchists and anti-fascists. These conclusions are presented in the new situation overview of violent extremism.

12.11.2020 | An informal meeting of EU home affairs ministers will be held via video conference on Friday 13 November. The topics on the agenda are the fight against terrorism and the reform of migration and asylum policy. Finland is represented by Minister of the Interior Maria Ohisalo. 

18.2.2021 | According to the annual report, work on preventing violent extremism and radicalisation has proceeded well despite the coronavirus pandemic.

16.4.2020 | Våldsbejakande extremiströrelser har visat sig vara verksamma på olika håll i Finland. Den våldsbejakande utomparlamentariska extremhögern har verksamhet inom alla polisinrättningars områden. Också våldsbejakande utomparlamentariska grupper inom extremvänstern, främst anarkister och antifascister, har observerats vara aktiva på vissa områden. 16.4.2018 | The position and role of women and children in radical Islamist terrorist organisations are under special review in the new situation overview of violent extremism. According to the 2017 overview, more than half of the suspected crimes reported to the police where an extremist motive was indicated were associated with violent right-wing extremism.

16.9.2019 | The Conference on Preventing Violent Radicalisation will bring together a wide range of international experts at Finlandia Hall, Helsinki, on 17–18 September 2019. They will discuss the prevention of violent radicalisation from the viewpoint of research, practical experiences and the work of public authorities.

4.10.2019 | A third of municipal decision-makers and almost half of the Members of Finnish Parliament or their assistants have been subjected to hate speech due to their official duties or positions of trust. In addition, about a third of the decision-makers consider that hate speech in public debate has increased in recent years. These are the results of a recent study.

29.3.2017 | Comprehensive action with returnees from the conflict zone is important to the security of Finnish society. On 29 March the ministerial working group on internal security and administration of justice adopted a report and an operating model, prepared under the Ministry of the Interior. The objective is to reduce the possible risk of violence and radicalisation posed by the returnees by, among other things, promoting their integration into Finnish society.

26.4.2019 | The Ministry of the Interior coordinates the work preventing violent radicalization and extremism nationally. The work is based on the national action plan, which was verified in spring 2016. The assessment on the implementation of the plan and its objectives and actions is now ready. The assessment was completed by KPMG on the assignment of the Ministry of the Interior.

6.6.2017 | Minister of the Interior Paula Risikko will attend the meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council in Luxembourg on 8–9 June. The topics on the agenda include the common European asylum system, return policy and prevention of violent radicalisation and extremism.

13.9.2017 | The EU home affairs ministers will meet at the Justice and Home Affairs Council in Brussels on 14 September. They will discuss counter-terrorism action and assess the current situation following the recent terrorist attacks in Europe. Finland’s representative at the meeting will be Minister of the Interior Paula Risikko, who will give an update on the situation in Finland.

26.9.2017 | The Ministry of the Interior published an annual report 2017 on the implementation of the National Action Plan for the Prevention of Violent Radicalisation and Extremism.

21.3.2017 | Finns would like to be able to discuss asylum policy without the fear of being stigmatised; the discourse should be relevant and fact-based. The issues that were highlighted in the discourse on asylum policy were social polarisation, promotion of integration activities during the asylum seeking process and the impact of the asylum seeker situation on security.
