11.6.2025 | The Ministry of the Interior has issued a new decree on smoke alarms. The decree lays down provisions on the minimum number of smoke alarms, as is the case at present. In addition, the decree specifies how smoke alarms must be placed. The aim is to clarify the regulation on smoke alarms and to make it easier to comply with the regulation. The decree was drafted to correspond to the amendments made to the Rescue Act. It will enter into force on 1 January 2026.

18.11.2024 | The new Preparing for Incidents and Crises guide aimed at the entire population has been published on Suomi.fi. The Ministry of the Interior produced the online guide together with the Digital and Population Data Services Agency and an extensive cooperation network. The guide collects preparedness instructions in one place.

7.9.2022 | In June-July, the Ministry of the Interior conducted an online survey to assess the situation and need for different services of Ukrainians who have fled to Finland. A total of 2,136 people responded to the survey.

25.8.2021 | The reform of chimney sweeping services, which entered into force in 2019, has not led to a significant increase in the prices of the services. On the other hand, sweeping intervals have lengthened slightly. These conclusions are presented in a study commissioned by the Ministry of the Interior from the University of Eastern Finland.

28.8.2023 | Finland's civil defence shelters are largely in good repair, but there is still some need for maintenance and repairs. A new Ministry of the Interior study shows that more than 90 per cent of civil defence shelters would provide people with good protection against the effects of conventional weapons. Shelter equipment is in most need of repair. Based on the report, the Ministry of the Interior has drawn up four recommendations for improving the network of civil defence shelters.

3.9.2024 | The 2025 budget proposal of Prime Minister Orpo's Government bolsters conditions for economic growth. Economic growth driven by the private sector will also serve to secure the financing base for central government finances. The fast-acting measures to curb indebtedness that were decided on due to the difficult situation in central government finances will move forward.

4.5.2021 | The Ministry of the Interior has appointed an investigation commission to investigate a building fire in Kerimäki on 1 May 2021, where one member of a contract fire brigade was seriously injured.

18.10.2022 | The Ministry of the Interior has sent out for comments a draft proposal on the levels and system of qualifications and degree programmes in rescue services and emergency response centre operations. The draft proposal contains two alternatives for education and training in rescue services and one for education and training in emergency response centre operations. Comments on the draft will be accepted until 14 November 2022.

18.2.2022 | On 18 February, the Ministry of the Interior sent out for comments draft amendments to the Aliens Act which would extend the use of a long-term visa known as a D visa. Long-term visas would speed up entry into the country for people who have been issued with residence permits.

31.3.2021 | On 31 March 2021, the Government proposed new legislation to improve the legal status and earnings opportunities of foreign berry pickers and to make the competitive environment equal to companies in the sector. As foreign berry pickers have not been deemed to be in an employment relationship but instead to work as entrepreneurs, their status is currently unregulated from a legal point of view.

9.4.2021 | The Ministry of the Interior sent out for comments a draft act on the treatment of persons in police custody and certain related acts. The purpose of this legislative reform is to update the provisions on custody-related rights, obligations and restrictions on fundamental rights of those deprived of their liberty, the powers of personnel performing guard duties and the obligations of the authorities.

7.1.2022 | In its first meeting on Friday 7 January, the ministerial working group on COVID-19 was briefed on the epidemiological situation, the spread of the Omicron variant, the burden on and capacity of the healthcare system, and the progress of vaccinations.

20.3.2020 | The Government submitted its first supplementary budget proposal for 2020 to Parliament on Friday 20 March. In the supplementary budget proposal, the police, the Border Guard and rescue services are to receive a total of EUR 9.2 million for expenditure arising from the coronavirus outbreak.
