7.5.2026 | The Government proposes that the President of the Republic approve amendments to the provisions on the powers of the police to carry out undercover activities in an information network. The amended legislation is scheduled to enter into force on 1 August 2026.

13.5.2026 | On 13 May 2026, the Government adopted a National Security Concept as a government resolution. The concept defines Finland’s key national security interests and focuses on measures to counter the most serious threats.

31.3.2025 | Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen will attend the Border Security Summit in London on 31 March. The ministerial summit will focus on crime related to people smuggling and organised immigration crime. The aim is to identify the best ways to combat these phenomena.

6.6.2024 | The Finnish Government endorses the European Commission’s proposal for an agreement on the exchange of information between Europol and the Brazilian authorities. The agreement is beneficial for Finland because it promotes the fight against serious crime and terrorism against Europe. The Government submitted its position on the agreement proposal to Parliament on 6 June.

24.1.2024 | The EU home affairs ministers will gather in Antwerp and Brussels in Belgium on 24 and 25 January for an informal meeting of ministers. The ministers will discuss migration and organised crime related to drugs.

31.10.2023 | Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen and Danish Minister of Justice Peter Hummelgaard met in Copenhagen on 31 October. They discussed youth and gang crime and its prevention, young offenders below the age of criminal liability and Finland's new Government Programme.

19.7.2023 | EU home affairs ministers will gather in Logroño in Spain on 20 July for an informal meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council. The agenda will include the fight against organised crime, the situation in Ukraine and migration. Finland will be represented by Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen.

25.1.2023 | EU home affairs ministers will gather in Stockholm on 26 January for an informal meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council. Minister of the Interior Krista Mikkonen will represent Finland at the meeting. The home affairs ministers will discuss the fight against organised crime and, in particular, the right of law enforcement and judicial authorities to access digital information and evidence.

2.2.2023 | In the first supplementary budget proposal for 2023, the Government proposes an increase of EUR 6.9 million for the administrative branch of the Ministry of the Interior. 1.12.2022 | On 30 November 2022, Minister of the Interior Krista Mikkonen and experts in several fields discussed youth crime and the emergence of gangs and gang crime. The round table meeting included experts by experience, parties engaged with young people through preventive work and authorities.

16.1.2025 | The Government has issued a decree bringing into force the agreement on police cooperation in the border area between Finland and Sweden. The agreement will enter into force on 1 February 2025.

13.5.2025 | Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen met Estonia's new Minister of the Interior Igor Taro in Helsinki on Tuesday 13 May. Topics of their discussion included preparedness, hybrid threats and their prevention, and police cooperation between Estonia and Finland.

3.9.2024 | “Next year’s budget proposal shows that the Government has the will to strengthen security. In Finland, help is available in times of need,” says Lulu Ranne, Minister of Transport, Communications and the Interior.

25.2.2021 | International internet crime and mobile crime are constantly evolving. Proposed amendments to the Europol Regulation concern, for example, exchange of information between Europol and private operators to ensure that prevention of serious international crime and terrorism meets today’s requirements.

13.2.2025 | The EU will not ask the Member States to immediately start full operation of the Entry/Exit System (EES). The Commission has drafted a proposal for a regulation that would allow for a progressive start of the system that has been in preparation for a long time. The Government informed Parliament of the Commission's proposal by submitting a Union communication on 13 February.

31.3.2021 | The Ministry of the Interior has published a guide on good practices for identifying and preventing hate crimes for the police and their stakeholders.

25.1.2024 | The European Commission strives to increase police cooperation in the fight against migrant smuggling and trafficking in human beings. In November, the Commission proposed a regulation that would reinforce Europol's role and increase information sharing between Member States. The Government expressed its position on the Commission's proposal in its communication submitted to Parliament on 25 January 2024.

8.9.2023 | Finland’s Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen will visit Stockholm on 11–12 September. She will meet Sweden’s Minister for Justice Gunnar Strömmer, Minister for Migration Maria Malmer Stenergard and Minister for Civil Defence Carl-Oskar Bohlin.

16.5.2024 | The agreement on police cooperation in the border area between Finland and Sweden will further improve the maintenance of security in the northern border area. The President of the Republic is to approve the agreement and the relevant bills on Friday.
